As much as we love a good rain shower to nourish our lawns, too much of a good thing can be detrimental — especially in shady areas where the sun struggles to dry out the moisture. This is particularly true for St. Augustine sod, a popular warm-season grass that thrives in full sun and does well in shade, but can struggle in shady, damp conditions.

Excessive rain in shady areas creates the perfect environment for fungus and disease. The lack of sunlight and airflow leads to prolonged moisture, which promotes fungal diseases such as brown patch, dollar spot, and gray leaf spot. These can take hold quickly and spread, causing unsightly damage to your lawn.

To prevent fungus and disease in shady areas, take a few proactive steps to ensure proper drainage and airflow.

## 1. Improve drainage

Make sure your lawn drains well so water doesn’t pool in shady areas. Consider installing French drains or adding topdressing to improve soil structure and drainage.

## 2. Avoid overwatering

Be mindful of how much water your lawn receives, especially in shady spots where moisture lingers. Water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth and let the soil dry out between waterings.

## 3. Increase sunlight

Trim back overhanging trees or bushes to let more sunlight reach your St. Augustine sod. Thinning out dense canopies improves airflow and reduces moisture buildup.

## 4. Aerate regularly

Aerating relieves soil compaction and promotes better drainage in shady areas. Aerating in the spring and fall helps keep your lawn healthy and disease-resistant.

## 5. Monitor for signs of disease

Watch for early signs of fungal disease — discolored patches or thinning grass. If you notice anything, address it early or consult a lawn-care professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
