The right mowing height for Florida sod varieties is not one number. It is set by the grass you have in the ground. Cut a standard St. Augustine lawn at the two inches that looks tidy on a Bermuda fairway and you scalp it. The canopy opens to weeds, and the roots we worked to establish stall. We install sand-bottom sod across Riverview and Brandon, and the mower setting is the single care decision customers get wrong most often. Here is the variety-by-variety reference, the numbers from UF/IFAS, and the one timing rule that matters most on brand-new sod.

## The one rule that beats every mower setting

Before the variety numbers, the rule that protects all of them: never remove more than one-third of the blade in a single pass. UF/IFAS ties this to root health, not to looks. Take off more than a third and the plant pulls energy out of the roots to rebuild leaf, which is the opposite of what a lawn needs in our heat.

Tampa Bay sits in USDA hardiness zone 9b to 10a, so our warm-season grasses grow nearly year round. They push hardest from roughly March through November and slow, without going fully dormant, through the cool weeks of winter. That long season means you are mowing most of the year. It also means a bad habit repeats fifty times instead of ten. Keep the blade sharp. A torn, frayed cut browns at the tips and invites the same fungal disease our rainy season already encourages.

## How low to cut St. Augustine in Florida

St. Augustine is what goes down on most of the yards we sod, and it is the variety homeowners cut too short. The honest answer to how low to cut St. Augustine in Florida depends on the cultivar, and the spread is wider than people expect.

- Floratam and Bitter Blue (standard St. Augustine): 3.5 to 4 inches. These are coarse, upright grasses that need leaf area to shade their own roots. UF/IFAS puts standard cultivars at 3.5 to 4 inches.
- CitraBlue: nearer 2.5 to 3 inches. This newer UF release grows more horizontally, so it holds density at a lower cut without scalping.
- ProVista: 3 to 4 inches, but mowed about half as often. Scotts breeds it to grow at roughly half the vertical rate of Floratam, so the setting stays tall while the calendar relaxes.

Taller is the safer error with St. Augustine. A four-inch canopy shades out crabgrass and rides out a dry week far better than a scalped one. If you are weighing which St. Augustine suits your light and traffic before you settle on a height, our St. Augustine sub-variety comparison breaks down Floratam, ProVista, Bitter Blue and CitraBlue side by side.

## Mowing height for Zoysia and Bermuda in Florida

The rest of what we install cuts shorter than St. Augustine. The gap is real. Set the same mower one way for all of it and most of it suffers.

Empire Zoysia wants 1.5 to 2.5 inches. UF/IFAS lists medium- to coarse-textured zoysias in that band, and most Tampa Bay homeowners hold Empire near two inches with a standard rotary mower. It is dense and slow, so it forgives a missed week better than Bermuda does.

Bimini Bermuda is the one genuinely low grass we carry, around 1 to 1.5 inches on a homeowner rotary. Bermuda loves full sun and heavy traffic and will take a close cut. Let it grow shaggy and then scalp it back, though, and you expose brown stems that recover slowly.

Bahia sits back up at 3 to 4 inches. It is the low-input, full-sun grass, and cutting it tall keeps the seed heads down and the stand even.

## The first mow on new sod in Florida: timing is everything

Here is the part farm-side guides skip. The first mow on new sod in Florida is governed by roots, not the calendar. Mow too early and the wheels and the blade tear sod that has not knitted to the soil yet, and you can shift whole pieces out of line.

Use the tug test, not a date. Around day 10 to 14, grab a corner of a piece and pull gently. If it resists and the roots hold, it is ready. Warm soil and full sun can root a lawn in about 10 days; a shaded or cooler yard may want closer to three weeks, and both outcomes are normal. We install year round, and the tug test is what tells you the lawn is ready in any season, not the month on a calendar.

When it is ready, raise the deck to the tall end of your variety’s range for that first cut and take only the tips. Sod University makes the same point: the first mow should barely shorten the grass. The fastest way to undo a day of installation is to scalp sod that only just took root. Mow it high, and let the roots catch up to the top growth.

## Your Tampa Bay lawn mowing guide, at a glance

If you remember nothing else from this lawn mowing guide for Tampa Bay: cut to your variety, and never take more than a third in a single pass. On St. Augustine, when you are unsure, go taller. The number on your mower deck matters far less than matching it to the grass actually in your yard.

Not sure which variety you have, or choosing one before an install? Our best sod for Tampa Bay comparison lays out St. Augustine, Zoysia and Bermuda against your light and traffic. When we install sand-bottom sod, our project managers note your cultivar and the height it wants, so the first mow and every one after starts from the right setting. If you are planning a renovation and want that walked through for your own yard, we are glad to help.
