MSMA Herbicide and Florida Lawns: What the EPA Review Means
Can you still use MSMA herbicide on a Florida lawn? What the EPA review and TPI advocacy mean for Bermuda and Zoysia weed control in Tampa Bay.
If you have been researching MSMA herbicide for a Florida lawn, here is the short version: you cannot legally spray it on your home turf here, and the EPA review in the news will not change that. MSMA is a professional and farm tool. The yards we sod across Riverview and Brandon are not legal sites for it. What the review actually decides is whether the sod farms that grow our grass, along with golf courses and highway crews, keep this herbicide at all. That matters to your lawn, just not the way the headlines suggest.
What MSMA Herbicide Means for a Florida Lawn Today
MSMA, short for monosodium methanearsonate, is an organic arsenical herbicide registered in the United States since 1964. The EPA allows it on only a short list of sites: cotton, sod farms, golf courses and highway rights-of-way (EPA).
In Florida the rules are tighter still. The EPA states plainly that MSMA may not be used in Florida at all, except on cotton in a named list of Panhandle counties, and that residential lawn use was canceled back in 2009 (EPA). So a homeowner spraying an MSMA weed killer on Bermuda grass in Florida is off-label. It always has been. The real question is not whether you lose the product. You never had legal access to it in the first place.
The EPA Herbicide Review, Step by Step
This fight is not new. The current EPA herbicide review of this turfgrass chemistry runs back nearly two decades. Every filing sits in one place, the registration review docket EPA-HQ-OPP-2013-0107 on Regulations.gov. The timeline tells the story better than any summary.
- 2006 to 2009: Water samples from Florida golf courses came back high in arsenic. In January 2009 the EPA reached an Agreement in Principle with the registrants to end MSMA’s remaining turf use after December 31, 2013 (EPA).
- 2012: In September 2012 the agency modified that agreement. It would wait for a National Academy of Sciences peer review of how inorganic arsenic causes cancer before ruling on the remaining turf uses, so the December 2013 cutoff was rescinded and sod-farm and golf-course use continued (Federal Register, March 2013).
- 2021 to 2022: The EPA released draft human health and ecological risk assessments alongside a Proposed Interim Registration Review Decision in March 2021, then a Registration Review Report in September 2022 (EPA).
TPI’s Advocacy and Why Sod Growers Care
Growers are not letting go. In 2026 Turfgrass Producers International submitted 11 support letters to the U.S. EPA backing continued MSMA registration for turf (TPI). The reason is narrow. MSMA still clears tough perennial grasses and sedges from production fields cheaply, before the sod is ever cut, and few legal products match it.
What It Means for Your Bermuda or Zoysia Lawn
If you run Bermuda or Zoysia sod and were counting on MSMA, plan around legal products instead. For Bermuda and Zoysia post-emergent weed control, these are the labeled actives homeowners and licensed applicators actually use in warm-season turf (UT Extension, PDF):
- Nutsedge: halosulfuron (SedgeHammer) or sulfentrazone (Dismiss).
- Goosegrass and crabgrass: quinclorac (Drive XLR8), or sulfentrazone before the weed tillers out.
- Broad spectrum: Celsius WG and Certainty (sulfosulfuron), both of which cover grassy weeds, broadleaf weeds and nutsedge.
None of these beats a thick stand of grass plus a properly timed pre-emergent, which is the honest weed-control story for Florida sod in 2026. Our pre-emergent timing guide and Tampa Bay weed identification guide walk through the calendar and the chemistry so you buy the right thing once.
What We Tell Customers During Establishment
Tampa Bay sits in USDA Hardiness Zones 9b to 10a, where warm-season grass and the weeds that fight it both grow close to year round (UF/IFAS). We install sod in every month of the year here, and the first weeks after an install are when weed pressure spikes, because grading wakes a dormant seed bank in the soil.
So we tell every customer the same thing. Do not reach for any post-emergent on brand-new turf, MSMA or otherwise. Young roots cannot metabolize it safely. Wait until the lawn has been mowed a few times, usually four to six weeks on a fresh install. In those first weeks, hand-pull the early flush of crabgrass and chamberbitter. A sprayer can wait. Our guide to weeds after a new install covers that window in full.
The MSMA review will play out on the EPA’s clock, not ours. For the lawns we install across Hillsborough and Manatee, the better investment was never one herbicide. It is dense, fresh-cut sand-bottom sod that shades weeds out before they start. If you are weighing a Bermuda or Zoysia lawn and want to think through the weed pressure on your own site, our project managers are glad to walk the yard with you.
