Bahia is typically harvested directly out of a cow pastures so it does not arrive in your lawn looking like any other farm raised and managed turf. You can expect it to have a few weeds, be a bit tall and unkempt and might not always hold in full pieces. Another disadvantages of Bahia is the number of and height of the seed heads it produces. On the other hand Bahia is the most drought tolerant grass we sell and is the most economically priced. “Field grass” as it is commonly referred to in Florida, is known for its vigor and ability to recover. Being a cheap sod option and not needing any regular irrigation are two reasons you see it along the road sides and on many county and municipal grass projects.

Floratam St Augustine is still a popular grass and most widely used turf in the home lawn in Tampa is Floratam St Augustine. Well adapted to most soils and full sun environments. Floratam is a course textured cultivar with a wide and long leaf blade. Floratam is very popular and does fairly well in most lawns with proper care. The disadvantages to Floratam include poor cold and shade tolerance relative to other St Augustine varieties. Without proper care, as with most St Augustine varieties, it is susceptible to chinch bugs, gray leaf spot, and other turf diseases.

Bitter Blue is very similar in looks to Floratam St Augustine with a deeper blue color as the name implies. Making it a good selection of turf for your yard where Floratam will be used or is already planted in the sunny areas, Bitter Blue St Augustine can be added in the light shade areas without much transition. Blades tend to be a bit finer as well.

Mowed typically at a height of three to four inches, and mowing frequency should be adjusted to the amount of growth, never removing more than one third of the height of the leaf blade while mowing.
